The town of Greenstone in Northern Ontario and the Ginoogaming First Nation plan to reopen a waferboard plant in the town and a nearby plywood facility, despite having no wood supply, reports Tbnewswatch.

The parties signed a memorandum of understanding in August pledging to work together to urge the province to provide the wood allocation needed to fully reopen the waferboard facility in Greenstone and parts of a plywood facility in Longlac.

The plants have been shuttered since 2008, and reopening them could create as many as 330 direct and 768 indirect jobs.

Greenstone Mayor Renald Beaulieu said he understood hardwood resources were available and not currently being utilised that could support the plant.

Ontario’s wood supply competition, which allocated about four million m3 of timber to 36 organizations, ended earlier this summer, but Beaulieu said the provincial government should be in a position to react as new ideas arise.
