Brazil’s newest MDF manufacturer, Eucatex SA has carried out trials using special resins for its new fibreboard with the aim of raising the firm’s panel export profile in the USA.

The Sao Paulo state board producer, which launched its first 350,000m3/year T-HDF/MDF line at Salto in October 2010, is aiming to manufacture panels to meet the strict California Air Resources Board CARB Phase II emissions standard requirements.

Late last year, the Dieffenbacher continuous production line was turning out a range of MDF board in different thicknesses and adjusting output ready for its target thin HDF panels. The new unit was scheduled to go into full production in January this year.

The CARB Phase II regulation, introduced at the start of this year, sets a strict new upper limit for formaldehyde emissions from composite wood panels either sold in California or used in finished products offered in the state.

The first stage of the regulation, CARB Phase I standard, took effect in January 2009.
