Five workers died after the September 22, 2012 blaze which resulted from an explosion in the fibre screening section of the 750,000m3/year continuous MDP line. The Masisa do Brasil plant was closed for four months while the incident was investigated.

In late January 2013, Masisa do Brasil revealed it had received the go-ahead from the Labour Ministry to begin the process of rehabilitating Montenegro mill.

Prior to the accident, Montenegro mill saw its MDP production increase significantly. Masisa reported output in Q3, 2012 rose 14% against the production in the same period for 2011.

The group reported income up 30.7% to US$20.3m in Q3, 2012 against US$15.5m in Q3, 2011.
